Little Susie Wing Needle Sunbonnet Sue 5×7

Wing Needle Sunbonnet Sue, Susie, machine embroidery

“Wake up little Susie, wake up”

~~~ A link to purchase ‘LIttle’ Susie 5×7 is at the bottom of this page ~~~
I’ve been hanging onto this idea for a long time. I don’t know  why it has taken me so long to make one. Maybe hearing people say they are sick of them. There are a lot of them available. But I still like them and wanted to make this one not so much for quilting but dressing her up a bit with specialty stitches. From the response to Susie I made Little Susie for folks who want Susie but cannot sew a design that large.
I make many of my own stitches. In this case the wing needle stitches, the eyelets, and the woven fill on her hat.
Be Dee-Lightful Dee
Dee, Delightful Dee, Girls, wing needle, applique, auburn, redhead, brunette, blond
~~~~ Links to each collection are at the bottom of this page ~~~~

Dee is a friend of mine who has dark auburn hair and a peaches and cream complexion. Also her favorite color is blue.

I asked another friend what saying I should add to it. She thought about it and said “Be Dee-Lightful!” and I immediately loved it. Thank you Mari for that perfect description to this Dee-Lightful picture.

Dee is a tender heart, whose expertise in many subjects makes for great conversations. I have learned a lot about computers – social media and cyberspace security from her. She is also a Dee-Lightful person.

Be Dee-Lightful Dee

I sewed this Dee combination design next to Pami onto green cotton/linen. Now I can make the pretty long pillow I had planned for this project. Her dress is applique fabric but the rest is embroidery. The fabric I chose for her dress has a whirl that almost matches the whirl of her dress in the wind. A happy surprise.

Be Dee-Lightful Dee – Lacy Hem Sewn Without a Wing Needle

The wing needle lacy edge along the bottom of the hem is sewn with a regular needle.

In this version of Dee, her dress is not applique (but it can be). Instead I sewed the fill in her dress with a wing needle as well as the lacy hem. You can see the light coming through the holes created by the wing needle when making the lacy circles on the hem. Light shows through some of the wing needle eyelets in her dress as well.

Options

Although I offer two versions of Dee’s dress – applique and wing needle, it can also be both.  So there are really three versions of Dee’s dress. The wing needle fill on her dress can be sewn through the applique fabric as well.

It’s your choice – applique, wing needle fill, or applique + wing needle fill for her dress.

Alternate Hair Colors

I made a few computer renderings of alternate hair colors. The same thread color choices will apply regardless if a brunette, blond, red, or auburn. The colors will still be considered dark, darker, darkest, plus a lighter dark for the highlights in her hair. I hope these are helpful.

Susie – Wing Needle Sunbonnet Sue

Wing Needle Sunbonnet Sue, Susie, machine embroidery

What makes Sunbonnet Sue sweeter than she already is?

Wing Needle Stitches!

~~~~ A link to purchase Susie is at the bottom of this page ~~~~
I’ve been hanging onto this idea for a long time. I don’t know why it has taken me so long to make one. Maybe hearing people say they are sick of them. There are a lot of them available.
But I still like them and wanted to make this one not so much for quilting but dressing her up a bit with specialty stitches.
I sewed her on a medium weight cotton/linen table runner embroidery blank with a wide hemstitched hem.
If you like this design, please let me know so I can make others to go with her.
Susie Sunbonnet Sue
I make many of my own stitches. In this case the wing needle stitches, the eyelets, and the woven fill on her hat.
My plan is to repeat her or make a second one, and sew her on the other end of the table runner. Then the center is open season for more wing needle. Should I put it on my night stand or make a pillow out of it. Hmmm!
I have a new day bed to decorate. Maybe I should make two!
Susie Sunbonnet Sue
My favorite color combination is pink, green, and cream. So there you have the colors. Smiles
I took this photo with light behind her so you can see the wing needle effect. A large jeans needle gives the same effect. It’s just not as prominent, but still very pretty.
Susie Sunbonnet Sue
Notions
  • Medium weight 100% cotton or cotton/linen blend fabric or embroidery blank – I used a table runner embroidery blank of medium weight cotton with a wide hemstitched edge. Wing Needle stitches sew best on natural fabrics where the wing part of the needle can separate the fibers of the fabric. I do not recommend polyester, acrylic, or man made fabrics.
  • Medium weight soft tear away stabilizer – I used 2 layers
  • Wing Needle – I used size 100 Schmetz.
  • OR a large jeans needle will give the same effect just not as dramatic but still very pretty.
To find out if you can use a wing needle please visit my tutorial.
  • Top Stitch Needle – I used size 12 Schmetz
  • Machine Embroidery threads #40 weight – colors desired. I used:
    • white to match the fabric
    • pale pink, light pink
    • pale green, light green
    • flesh, flesh 2 shades darker for outlines & details
    • cream for the white areas
    • Light tan for details over cream areas
    • 2 shades darker than cream for shade under her brim
    • light red brown for shoes
    • light blue for flowers
    • soft yellow for flower centers
What’s Included
  • Susie – Wing Needle Sunbonnet Sue
  • 160 x 245 mm
Pami – Flaunt Your Sass!
Pami - Flaunt Your Sass Embroidery Project
Links to the collections can be found at the bottom of this page
Pami
If you like this design, please let me know so I can make others to go with her.
I stumbled across this beautiful artwork and immediately said, ‘Pam’!
Pam is a friend of mine who has red hair and a peaches and cream complexion. Also her favorite color is black.
I asked another friend who knows both of us what saying I should add to it. She immediately said “Flaunt your Sass!” and it stuck. Thank you Mari for that perfect description to this sassy picture.
But don’t let that description fool you. Our Pam has one of the sweetest most beautiful hearts you could know.
It has been great fun digitizing this design with the flouncy hair and darling face. Although it uses few thread colors, it has a lot of thread changes and they are necessary. Everything has to sew in a specific order from backwards to forward.
Her dress is an applique fabric that can be sewn using a wing needle to create the circles on the dress or without any of that stitching at all. The pink applique dress is one such example where I skipped the wing needle stitching. The white applique dress is one such dress where I used the wing needle and stitched the wing needle circles. It’s hard to see that because I used black thread. But it is there.
Pami
I want so much to put her on a tunic, but right now I have a new day bed to decorate and she will be part of that.
Pami is available in 2 sizes
5 inches wide and 7 inches wide
Or Get Them All
See links at the bottom of this page
  • The 5 inches wide includes 2 Pami’s – a 5×7 and a 5×8, a Pami bust, and Flaunt your Sass! lettering.
  • The 7 inches wide includes Pami in 7×11 size, a Pami bust, and Flaunt your Sass! lettering.
Also, plan ahead, I have one more red head coming up. Her name is Dee.
Notions I used
  • Madeira Polyneon threads black, dark gray, white, and dark taupe; colors Dark Auburn 1639, Medium Auburn 1779, and Light Auburn 1616 for her hair; Darkest Auburn 1638 for her lips; 1927 for her skin; 1656 for her skin shadows
  • Pellon ShirTailor fusible interfacing
  • Medium Weight Soft tear away stabilizer
  • Pima Cotton Broadcloth in cream color
  • Green Cotton/Linen blend
  • Wing Needle size 100
  • Wonderfil pre-wound bobbins in gray
  • #12 Topstitch needle
